SAGITTARIUS FULL MOON / TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE - 26 May 2021
This is no ordinary Full Moon, being a supermoon and a lunar eclipse, which signals the beginning of a new chapter - a time of endings and beginnings. It is a super-charged Full Moon which could have more of a far reaching impact than your average Full Moon and has the potential to bring some kind of shift in perception, understanding and consciousness. Eclipse season surely is a sensitive and potent time, so it is important to be aware and open to the potential for some kind of an inner or outer shift. Lunar Eclipses occur when the Sun and the Full Moon are sitting very close to the Nodes of the Moon, otherwise known as the Destiny Line. This brings the potential for inner and outer experiences that help us to step outside of the comfort zone and grow. We will feel the energy of this Eclipse most acutely if we have personal planets or angles around 5° degrees of a sign, especially Gemini and Sagittarius or the other mutable signs Virgo and Pisces.
The Moon is sitting right next to the South Node of the Moon in Sagittarius, which puts a lot of emphasis on our beliefs, philosophy, intuition and higher wisdom. We are asked to look at what aspects of Sagittarius might be unhealthy or holding us back and preventing growth and to look to the energy of the Gemini North Node for our growth and learning. As with any Full Moon, we are encouraged to integrate the higher qualities of both signs rather than veering too far in either direction. The Sagittarius South Node may give us an intuitive sense or a gut feeling around what is going on at the moment, but the Gemini North Node encourages us to take the time to do some research and gather information to back up that inner knowing. Gemini also encourages us to find our voice and speak up about anything that is really important to us.
The Sagittarius part of us can harbour some pretty strong beliefs and we may try to convince others of our version of the “truth”, while Gemini invites us to be open to listening to other people’s points of view, because we may learn something we haven’t thought of. If there is one thing that is absolutely true right now - none of us can definitively say we know the whole truth! It is so very important to keep an open mind and to keep our hearts open to one another instead of becoming too overzealous about our own beliefs or opinions. Similarly, believing something simply because someone has told us it is true is not very helpful at all! It can lead us to accepting ideas and “truths” that are utterly ridiculous and have no basis whatsoever in reality. One of Gemini’s greatest gifts is common sense and the ability to think things through logically instead of believing that something is true simply because it suits us or because we want it to be.
One of the more beautiful traits of Sagittarius is the gift of faith in a higher power and wisdom that is somehow guiding us in the right direction even when everything seems bleak or hopeless. It is the part of ourselves that keeps bouncing back, whatever knocks or blows we may experience. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, has recently popped into Pisces for a brief sojourn, where it will remain until July. Jupiter is very much at home in Pisces, bringing the gift of expanded consciousness, hope, faith and trust in the flow of life. However, it is forming a challenging square aspect to the Sun and Moon, which warns us against acting from blind faith alone. There is also the potential for overwhelm, information overload and even disillusionment or a crisis of faith. Ultimately Jupiter in Pisces asks us to turn inwards, to keep the faith and to connect to our inner knowing, listening to the whispers of our inner divinity that tell us that ultimately everything is going to work out just fine.
Mercury, the ruler of the Gemini North Node, is very strong in its own sign and is also getting ready to turn retrograde on 31 May. With the Sun, Mercury and Venus all in Gemini for this Moon, this is a good time to share ideas, ask questions, gather information, spread information, chat with others and generally be quite communicative and sociable! Gemini is a very clever sign that gives us the capacity to figure things out and make rational decisions based on thorough research. However, it can also mean that we are too much in our head and does bring the potential for information overload.
As Mercury goes retrograde, we are encouraged to go back over whatever we have learned and experienced in the last few weeks, taking time for reflection, reviewing, revisiting and looking at things in retrospect. We may benefit from some hindsight, possibly having missed something first time around that could now come to light and help us to understand better. Sometimes people from the past can pop up during a Mercury retrograde with a message for us, especially if we have unfinished business.
Saturn is also going retrograde on 24 May, so this energy will be strong during this Eclipse. Saturn is the planet of control, authority, reality, discipline, maturity and patience. There is the potential for increased restriction, censorship, suppression, limitation and control while Saturn is getting ready to turn retrograde, as it is closer to the earth during this time. Saturn first went into Aquarius on 21 March 2020, an important time in our history when the situation we currently find ourselves in first began, and it will remain there until March 2023. This brings the possibility of limited freedom, liberties and rights, greater authoritarian control through technology, the continued prevention of the capacity to gather in groups and a heavy reality check regarding the impact of technology and virtual reality on our health and general well-being. It is so important that we take responsibility for ourselves in this area and limit the amount of time we spend using our various gadgets!
Saturn will now move back towards the second of three squares to Uranus, which will be exact on 14 June and holds the potential for the breakdown of the structure of our reality as we know it. Uranus and Saturn are completely opposite energies, as Uranus seeks to liberate us from the conditioning, control, limitation and programming of Saturn, inviting us to break the rules and open up to a different way of doing things. The more rigid, programmed and conformist we are, the more unsettling it will probably be. It is very interesting that rebellious, awakening and revolutionary Uranus is in Taurus, the sign that represents Mother Earth and the natural world, while authoritarian, controlled Saturn is in Aquarius, the sign of technology. This could signify a fundamental split in society, with people literally living in two different realities.
It is going to be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks as these two powerful forces come up against each other. It is quite possible that the structures of our lives could feel less stable, and we could feel tension between the part of us that seeks freedom and change and the more cautious part of us that seeks to control our reality out of fear. Indeed, it is very important to be aware of where and how we feel fear and what it is we are afraid of. We can make terrible decisions when coming from a place of fear.
The Sabian Symbol for the Full Moon, at 6° Sagittarius, is: “A game of cricket”, which Dane Rudyar describes as “The development of skill in group-situations, testing collective goals.” He goes on to say: “Any society is built on the interplay between groups of people, each group united by an at least temporary aim. The individual person within the group is assigned a particular role in the play, and definite rules have to be obeyed. The game teaches not only personal skill, but fairness and cooperation. Where this symbol is found, the value of making individual-will or ego-will subservient to collective cultural patterns is emphasised. This symbol refers to the importance of developing GROUP SOLIDARITY”. This symbol is quite clear. We can’t do this alone. We must find our groups or tribes, joining forces and figuring out how we can contribute to the whole in the spirit of cooperation and solidarity.
There certainly could be a lot of information and opinions flying about during this Moon! We have a chance to gain greater clarity and understanding, especially if we keep an open, curious mind and don’t allow ourselves to get stuck in limiting beliefs. The Gemini/Sagittarius axis definitely highlights the subtle difference between truth and fact! This Moon has a connection with the Full Moon/Eclipse of 26 May 2002, which occurred in exactly the same degree of Sagittarius, so it may help to look back and contemplate what was occurring energetically during that time. This could be a continuation of whatever was happening then - the next phase. It does seem like a good time to listen to our guts while talking to others and gathering information that will help us to know what to do next. The greatest gifts that Sagittarius has to offer are faith, a spirit of adventure and the capacity to see the bigger picture. Never have these been more important than now! We are invited to ride the waves of change with hope in our hearts, trusting that ultimately we will be guided in the right direction.
Much Love
Amy
